Consumer Information Obligations (CIO)
Consumer Information Obligations (CIO) came into force at the beginning of 2000 and are designed to encourage packaging re-use or greater consumer involvement in the collection and recycling of packaging waste.
Obligated producers who have a main activity in selling must provide consumers to whom they sell, information on a range of recycling issues.
The CIOs require the following information be provided:
- Where packaging can be recycled
- The consumers role in contributing to re-use
- The meaning of labels on packaging
Printing information on the packaging is mandatory in terms of its composition. You may include information about where to recycle so that consumers can find their nearest recycling centre, such as www.recycle.co.uk or www.recyclenow.com
Another place to publish this information is your company website. As well as fulfilling your legal obligations, publishing recycling information demonstrates to your customers your company's commitment to the environment.
